Thoughts of spring.....

While spring is a long way away, especially here in the mountains, I am already planning changes to the garden. I envision steps in the chicken yard, a greenhouse, planter beds overflowing with produce and a space for each of our three children to plant and participate in the growing. The ground is still a big block of ice, but dreams will turn to reality as the cold winter nights turn to warmer spring days.

Our yard looks pretty sad in winter. The garden beds are barren, snow covers the ground in all the shady spots and trees are brown and boring. However, this is the time to start browsing the seed catalogues, planning out what you know your family will eat and even checking out nurseries for end of season sales.

This year we will be planting a variety squash, tomatoes, lettuces and peas. The children will get to choose four items for their garden and I have a feeling broccoli will be a highlight. Our kids love broccoli and I'm so happy about that. I am also hosing off the worm bins and getting those ready to set up. We purchased these last year and haven't used them yet. The chickens will love worms!

What plans do you have for your garden? Have you started receiving your seed catalogues? What is your favorite item to plan?
