On the road antiquing- Bakersfield

Attic of Woolworths
I found myself in Bakersfield a few days ago and was excited by all the new antique stores popping up. This has been a long time favorite area for antiquing for me and the new shops can add up to an entire day of shopping bliss. I stopped in an old favorite, Five and Dime Antique Store. This store is located in an old Woolworth's Department store and still retains it's original lunch counter (yes, you can eat there) as well as the original bathrooms and elevator. The store boasts three floors of fun finds sure to delight even the most discriminating buyer.

Chalkboard
The only item on my shopping list this week is a dresser for the girl's room. I'm looking for a shabby chic highboy in either white or a fun color. A project piece at a good price is also a consideration. While I didn't find the dresser I did happen upon a nicely distressed chalkboard. These seem to be popping up everywhere and though they are simple enough to make sometimes it's nice to just support a dealer and purchase one. The blue was the perfect color for the girl's room.

I don't think I've shared the girl's room since I redid it. When we got the girls we had a convertible crib and a toddler bed. As the girls are four now they were really ready for some big girl beds and some big girl bedding. My sister was gracious enough to give us some adorable Pottery Barn surf themed bedding she wasn't using. We moved things around and it's working well. I added the cute vintage orange nightstand (see previous project posts) which added a splash of color. The girls love their room and spend a lot of time playing up there with their big brother. It's a cheerful and youthful room.

Have you found any new antiquing spots?

  1. Hi, I found your blog while searching for google images of antique stores in Bakerfield! My husband & I are headed to the Wrestling finals this weekend and while he's excited for that, I'm excited at the prospect of new places to hunt for treasure! :-)

  2. I don't know if you'll see this before you go Mindi but you really want to check out Chester and 19th street all the way down to the end. There are about 6 very large antique malls and they get better and better. In between are a lot of cute smaller shops.
